Today, we watched a short clip on Jeremy's family that was featured in our local CBS news on Christmas Eve. We continue to be grateful for all people who have and continue to serve in the military. Thank you! (Click on the link below)

Seasons Greetings!
I recently completed Calm Classroom Academy. It is a new program committed to cultivating peaceful, engaged classrooms by empowering students and teachers with mindfulness skills that support mental and emotional wellbeing. This week, we did 3 very short, mini mindfulness exercises everyday. This afternoon, students made a poster to help remind them to be calm throughout the busy break. Ask them about it! They are practicing feeling their breath & noticing how they feel. Breathe in: I Breathe out: Am Calm Here's a short video about mindfulness and making positive choices. It's an old story about "feeding the good wolf". This is one of my favorite versions: Speak Up: Thursday, December 20
Spelling Test: Thursday, December 20 Party/ Game day: Friday afternoon Please continue to work with your child over break: Tying shoes independently Memorizing address & phone number Reading-maybe a field trip to the Public Library Math-Time telling & coin pennies, dimes, nickels up to $1.00 Hour of Code & LOTS of outside activity Hello Families!
We are studying computer programming this week. Click on the button above to link your 1st grader to our site. Click on Candy Quest to program the monster to walk and jump: Hello Families,
Please play Domino Top-It with your child to build number sense. Pick a domino, create a simple number sentence and add it together. Take turns to model & repeat. (For example: 2+8=10) The highest sum wins. If this is too easy, play Addition Top-It with playing cards. Choose 2 or 3 cards to add together, your child needs to practice saying the number sentence and the answer. Model this and repeat. The highest sum wins. (Jacks=11, Queens=12, Kings=13) Thank you for your efforts! *Thursday, October 25: Vet Clinic Field Trip: We will be walking to Lake Country Vet Clinic for a field trip. Please have your child prepared for cold weather (coat, hat, gloves). We will walk unless it is raining. Permission is covered by a blanket form signed at the beginning of the school year for trips in Albany.
*Halloween Party: October 31: We will have a party and parade around the school. Please send your child's costume in a separate bag to help stay organized. *Please continue to help your child work on telling time to the hour and counting combinations of nickels and pennies. We have also just reviewed adding and subtracting so fact practice is also great to work on. Thank you! *Reading- Today your child will bring home a weekly practice sheet. These will come home at the beginning of each week. Practice reading this sheet throughout the week. It also contains the spelling words. Please practice those words too. Spelling tests are on Fridays unless it is a short week. Keep these sheets so that your child can go back and review as needed. Keep reading Library and Ziploc books, I am happy to refresh as needed. (Send a note when books are fluent and easy.)
*Math- Keep counting by 2's, 5's and 10's. You can also have them count backwards with those same patterns. We will start Moby Max to practice our Math facts. A parent sheet will come home later this week letting you know how to log on from home. *Conferences- Purple slips with your conference date and time will be sent home on Tuesday, October 2. *Friday, October 5- Walk-a Thon (Please dress for the weather) *1st Spelling test. We will NOT have Speak Up *Early Dismissal Day *Save the Date: Tuesday, Dec 11th 6:30PM for the Christmas Concert at the BEAT! Look for a Ziploc bag of books for your child to read and return DAILY. When these books become "too easy" add a note to the bag & I'll exchange for more challenging books. Please practice for 7 minutes everyday. THANK YOU. We are practicing using various reading strategies when we can't read a word: Look for word chunks you know or sound it out or skip it or "flip the vowel" from short to long or long to short . . . your imagination is your limit. Try to teach problem solving skills, guessing is OK too.
Counting by 2's to 32 is a Kindergarten skill, please work with your child to master this skill. Use pennies to count or practice in the car. Skip counting by 5's to 110 is another Kindergarten skill. Use nickels or take turns counting until your child has it mastered. In other news, Wednesdays are WEAR ORANGE days to Unite our Elementary against bullying. Fridays are WEAR PURPLE days to support the Huskies. Conference slips are in Purple Folders today. Please fill out and return by next week Tuesday (Sept 25th). Thank you so much. Remember to sign up for 100 mile club by tomorrow, Friday Sept 7. Walking starts on Monday, Sept. 10th. Students can walk from 7:30-8AM on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays. They can walk/run as much as they'd like and can go to breakfast at 7:45am. There are 2 staff members available, they will let students know when they can go to breakfast.
